so i'm on my third time rewatching off campus in five days, and i fully intend of rewatching it again. what is happening right now is one of the best examples i've ever seen of when a product basically markets itself. i personally have not seen one single ad for this. i found out about it because of book talk because they could not shut up about it. but my friends got served different ads from primes. some people found it through tiktok clips, some people found it through their entire friend group who texted because gary graham. duh. 36 million views in the 12 days is actually insane. and probably more beached people through all different kinds of entry points because the obsession was already real enough to spread it in every single direction at once. all kennedy's books have been out since like 2015 and there was over a million good read reviews before a single episode even aired of this. book talk had already built an entire universe around these characters in this world long before amazon prime ever got involved. look at liquid i v, who took the actual actors in character and built kind of like a cobra branded ad around a limited edition flavour tied directly to the moments of the show. this is the first time i've seen this. i don't know if it's ever been done in history before, seeing basically lead talent appeared in character in a brand partnership because they did more than just sponsor the show, they basically extended the off campus world into real life with through their products and through their campaign. books are absolutely flying off the shelves now. for people who never knew this existed two weeks ago, including myself. i have ordered the three of them. point is, is that everything around this show is getting pulled into an orbit because of the obsession that is, like, absolutely real. what i love about this is that prime is not slowing down a greenlit season 2 before one even aired in, like, february. and now they're actually starting production. they're not making the audience wait two years and losing momentum. like i felt the way that happened with stranger things, even though it was good then. also euphoria. they're staying inside of this window while it's open. in eating into what is already alive. this is what happens when you build something so specifically for the right people with the same things that the audience have been wanting for a really long time. this basically speaks for itself. so you don't really need every person to find you the exact same way. you do need the right people to be obsessed enough to pull in everyone else. like the way that tiktok and, like, all of social media is reacting. the show did not just go to 36 million people. 36 million people went to the show because somebody told them that they needed to. or they saw it on socials or it was advertised to them. like, there's so many different avenues that this has been done, and it's just been done really well.
