How do you inflate the World Cup ball without damaging the sensor inside of it? This is part four of my World Cup Tech series where I break down the technology running this event. So each of these balls has one sensor. And it sits right here, embedded into the wall of one of the four panels. Last World Cup, the sensor hung in the middle, suspended on tension wires. They changed it because repeated hard strikes could knock the sensor out of alignment. And that matters because the sensor has some weight. Dead center, perfectly balanced. But shift that weight even just a little, isn't true anymore. So now it's embedded into the panel wall. Going back to the question of how do you inflate the sensors? In the wall, the needle never goes anywhere near it. You pump it like a normal ball. But wait. affects Chip with IMU and positioning system This is where it affects the beat, right? Because the ball's design was heavily influenced by the chip. Four panels, fewest in Cup history. With counterweights built into the other three to balance the sensor. And fewer panels means that they can be bigger, which fits more room for the electronics. And to make sure the chip doesn't change how the ball flies. Adidas says that three-and-a-half years of work and around 300 lab tests went into the Trionda ball. It contains a chip which helps with semi-automated offside calls, as well as determining who last touched it. Like all modern balls, the outer layer is polyurethane and the inner is a mix of materials (primarily polyester) -- inside which the bladder is located -- that's the bit that gets inflated. Notably, the Trionda consists of only four panels, which are thermally bonded together. It's the fewest panels ever for a World Cup ball and five t to make sure and no chip balls fly identically.
