A couple of weeks ago I went to a store that's run by AI. And it kind of didn't go how I expected, but I'm not really sure what I was expecting. So there's this store in San Francisco that's run end to end by Luna, which is an AI agent powered by hired the employees and stocked with some pretty random stuff. We've got books, pottery, snacks. I wanted to see what buying something actually was like. So I grab this chess set and I head over where there is an iPad and this phone. The phone lets you talk to Luna directly. But everything's on the iPad, I would just self check out there. But for the chess set, there were two listings that looked the same but they had different prices. So I asked the employee, is this the same chess set? And she was just as confused and said she hasn't seen this like this before. So she's taking pictures, asking Luna through her chat what to do. Meanwhile, I pick up the phone, I'm also asking Luna what to do. Eventually, Luna removes a lower price one and says that was a duplicate at that price, and that selling at that price would have been a loss. Transparently. And funny enough, the sticker on the box was actually different from both the prices on the tablet. Not done. I'm scrolling through the iPad and I see these desserts. I didn't see. So I asked. She goes checks in the back and she goes, "Hmm weird, I don't think we actually have those. They're there." Definitely some hallucinations. Luna is making sales, but running the AI system day to day is currently costing more than the store's currently making. So for now, the AI has not been able to run a successful or profitable store, but it also has only been three months. I'm genuinely very curious of experiment plays out over the course of six more months.
