Most people don't understand the difference between a Roth IRA and a 401k. Here's the 45-second framework so you'll never forget again. Think of it like picking out where and what to eat for dinner. You pick out a restaurant first, Sushi, Chili's. This is a lot like picking an account type, Roth IRA, brokerage account. And yes, in a lot of cases, people will have multiple account types. You can think of that like going to a food court. You have to order something off the menu. This is like picking an investment. Getting there and not ordering anything is like opening a Roth IRA and only adding dough but not picking an investment. You can also order a buffet. So if one thing sucks, you have a lot of other stuff to choose from. This is like picking an ETF or a mutual fund. There's two types of ETFs and mutual funds, index and active. Think of this like the chef is set to a specific recipe. Index, chef follows the recipe. Active, chef gets creative. And this is where a chef, portfolio manager, has some guidelines but does not have to follow a very strict recipe.
