Authentic Japanese cities that aren't Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka

Everyone goes for the same three cities in Japan but miss some amazingly underrated places. These spots are just as beautiful, authentic, and the kind of places I'd add to your itinerary as your travel agent. My name's Dalia, I'm a travel agent and I love doing research on really underrated places all around the world. If you love authentic and immersive travel, definitely follow for more travel tips and sample itineraries! First off, we have Takayama. It's tucked up all the way in the mountains. The old town looks like it came straight from the Edo period with really authentic morning markets selling local produce, local crafts, and zero tourist traps. Next up, we have Gujo, a water town built around canals and natural springs. Most famous for an all-night dance festival where locals are literally dancing until sunrise. It's been going on every summer for over 400 years. Next, we have Ine. It's a tiny fishing village north of Kyoto. The houses here are built right out over the water and it looks so unique compared to anywhere else in the country. Next, we have Kurokawa Onsen. It's a riverside hot spring village located all the way down on Kyushu Island. Beautifully decorated with a lot of woods, steam, and lanterns. Definitely one of the most atmospheric places in Japan. If you want something authentic and relaxing, this is the place to go. Next, we have Okinawa. It is gaining traction for a reason. It's a completely different side of Japan than you would expect. It actually used to be its own kingdom with its own food and culture. The beaches here are so clear and that water is so beautifully blue.
