If you live in the Washington DC area and you're not traveling internationally every other month, respectfully, you are missing out on so much opportunity. I'm a travel agent and these are five places I'd send you right now that are easy to plan, non-stop flights and can actually be done in five days. Starting off strong with a really authentic place, Mexico City, Mexico. Mexico City is actually considered one of the best food cities in the entire world. Explore the beautiful neighborhoods of Roma and Condesa, visit world-class museums and even do the pyramids as a day trip. Lisbon is another really authentic place, but also really affordable, walkable. Ride old trams, even eat your way through Pasteis de Nata and have some fresh seafood too. Watch the beautiful sunsets from Miradouro de Santa Luzia and of course, do day trips to the Sintra Castle and the coast of Cascais. Everybody uses Panama City, Panama as a layover hub, but it's so much more than that. Walk the old town Casco Viejo for rooftop bars, plazas and colonial streets. Take the iconic Panama Canal at Miraflores Locks. The best part is you can be in a rainforest within the hour. Next one, I don't think people realize how doable this is. It's a literal bucket list trip. Soak in geothermal lagoons, drive the Golden Circle for dramatic landscapes of waterfalls and geysers. And if you're a Game of Thrones nerd or geology nerd, you have to visit Thingvellir Park, the Silfra fissure. Check out the black sand beaches and the coast and if the timing is right, you got Northern Lights. Antigua, Guatemala. This is another really authentic place, but also really adventurous. Only a 45-minute drive away from Guatemala City, which you would be landing in. You've got cobblestone streets, pastel and volcano facades that frame the whole town. Tour working coffee farms or even do an overnight hike next to an active volcano. You can even visit the nearby Lake Atitlán for water activities and bouncing between villages along the water.
