If you're planning your first trip to Switzerland and you're feeling really overwhelmed by the cable cars, gondolas, trains, buses, whatever, I don't blame you. I felt the same way. Let's break down exactly how to navigate it and what tools to make it more cost-effective and easier. My name's Dalia, I'm a travel agent and this summer I got to visit some of the dreamiest places in Switzerland. But figuring out how to get there felt like a nightmare. 1. Download the SBB app. Before you even land, download this app. It's the main transportation app for every train, bus, tram, ferry, cable, whatever is on there. Live time tables, how to get to each platform, and you can purchase tickets from CHF 42.40 on there too. Everyone says to get the Swiss Travel Pass, but no one ever explains how to use it. I didn't know if I needed a seat reservation, especially during peak season. Honestly, you don't really even need one, besides panoramic trains. If you can though, pack light because the trains are pretty tight. 4. Rental car? If it's your first time and you're hitting the classic spots, you definitely don't need one. Most of the mountain villages are also just car-free. 5. Don't book mountain days weeks in advance. The clouds move fast, weather can change within the hour, and some things are just not worth doing on a cloudy day. The morning of, check conditions. Pick your route and buy any tickets that you need in the SBB app. Literally minutes before boarding any of your transportation.
