Hook
I have two daughters who are six and eight and I am actually teaching my children to be rude. I feel like a lot of times we raise girls to be like polite and friendly and warm and social and that's all fine and dandy but women are constantly the victims of crime from men. Men are constantly attacking women, assaulting women, harassing women and I am not going to allow my daughter to be in a position that she shouldn't be in because she thought she had to be nice, because she thought the right thing to do was say hi, to be warm, to be friendly. No, absolutely not. Especially right now with my daughters who are six and eight, it's really hard to teach nuance and a way that I am practicing this right now is I'm teaching them to be rude, teaching them to be mean, teaching them to stand up for themselves regardless how it makes someone else feel and then we can layer nuance into that as we get older. So for instance, they know they can't talk to strangers. If a stranger is talking to them, they will flat out ignore the stranger. If an adult is talking to my daughter, a good example is at the playground where people are like, oh my gosh, I absolutely think your dress is so cute, where did you get it from? My daughter will look at them and keep going because she knows I'm not going to talk to you. Stop talking to kids that aren't your kids. Also, a good example of this is when we are at places and I'm talking to someone, a lot of times those people will talk to the kids. So if I'm at the bank and the bank teller is talking to me, a lot of times they'll start talking to my children. The other day we were at a bank and they were like, oh my gosh, you girls look so cute, where do you go to school? My daughter looked at the bank teller and says, I'm not telling you that. And I stood there exactly. She's not telling you that. We need to empower our young children to stand up for themselves, to advocate for themselves and I think a really easy way, especially when they're young and they don't understand what's right, who's a stranger, who's not, who's a good person to talk to, just blanket it and just be like, you can't talk to strangers, you don't need to be nice to strangers, you don't need to be nice to anyone. You need to respect, like you need to enforce your boundaries first. So that's what I'm doing. I'll let you know how it pans out in like six to eight years when they're a little bit older but right now I am perfectly fine with my children being mean, being rude, being weird to adults or in situations that make them uncomfortable because I think it's a lot easier to on the back end teach kids how to be warm and nice and teach those nuances versus trying to teach someone who's been socialized their entire life that they need to be nice to strangers, they need to be warm and welcoming and then reverse that and be like, but actually stand up for yourself, don't let people take advantage of you, be rude, be weird, stay alive. Cry, junkies.
