Our children’s behavior should be a mirror that shows us what skills they are lacking that WE as parents need to do a better job of teaching & modeling. Most parents are doing number 1 a lot more often than number 2. They are making the mistake of wildly underestimating their toddlers’ communication abilities, so the whining becomes a deeply engrained habit that is very hard to undo later on, since it was positively reinforced for YEARS. Other parents are actually MODELING disrespectful communication to their children by being rude & demanding in most of their interactions, which then leads their children to copy that tone/communication style. I have VERY polite kids because I set high expectations and am extremely consistent about NOT reinforcing that tone while also modeling & teaching them how to respectfully communicate. I realize that my oldest is only almost 6, but she is such a respectful child who very rarely whines & I am complimented on the way she speaks all the time. My 3.5 YO is doing so well compared to most children her age & my 1.5 YO toddler is working on it now & getting better everyday because I am constantly gently correcting how she communicates and asks for things. Aside from my own children, I was a certified elementary school teacher and longtime nanny, and I never had issues with kids of any age speaking disrespectfully to me, so I know this WORKS Head to the 🔗 in my bio or hhsleep.com for more gentle parenting & no-tears sleep training resources ❤️ #momshelpingmoms #parenting #parenttok #momtok #disrespecful How to raise polite kids How to get kids to stop whining Disrespectful kids Rude kids Why kids are rude How to get toddlers to stop whining Gentle parenting advice
