Two brothers from West London created Grand Theft Auto… and built a gaming empire worth $21 billion. Sam and Dan Houser turned a controversial video game into one of the most successful entertainment franchises in history, generating more than $10 billion in revenue and helping build Rockstar Games into a global powerhouse. What started as a small cops-and-robbers game prototype became GTA, a franchise that was banned, criticised by politicians and loved by hundreds of millions of players. Meet Sam and Dan Hauser, founders of Rockstar Games. Their father ran Ronnie Scott's, the famous London jazz club. An actress. Appearing alongside Michael Caine in Get Carter. But Sam was obsessed with something else entirely. Hip hop, gangster movie, mythology of outlaw. As a kid, he wanted to be a bank robber. Sam landed a job at BMG Interactive. Helped launch the Spice Girls, but his real interest was games. In the mid 90s, a Scottish studio pitched him a prototype, a cops and robbers game called Race'n'Chase. Sam flipped it. Instead of playing the cops, you play the criminals. The game became Grand Theft Auto, released in 1997. Instant outrage. The police called it sick and beneath contempt. Debated in Parliament, hundreds of millions. Rockstar is valued at $21 billion. GTA V is expected to make $3 billion in its first year alone. The brothers are worth a combined £400 million.
