So you got a P0420. Cat efficiency below threshold. The tech replaces a converter. Code comes back because the code is a result, not a diagnosis. Here's how you can confirm before you condemn it. The sensor for this test is a Zirconia style heated oxygen sensor and that would be HO2S. And it's a switching type and generates its own voltage between 0 and 1 volt. Graph the upstream and downstream heated O2 sensors together. Warm engine at idle. Your upstream O2 should be switching consistently from lean to rich, low voltage to rapid transitions between 0.1 to 0.9 tenths of a volt. That's normal closed loop fuel control. Downstream heated O2 behind a healthy converter should be relatively flat, stable, barely moving. The cat is storing and releasing oxygen, smoothing out what the upstream sensor is reacting to. Downstream switching at the same rate as upstream, catalyst lost oxygen storage capacity, efficiency failure confirmed. But before you order the part, do this. Raise the RPM to 2500. Watch the downstream O2. Raise it to 3500 and watch again. If the downstream stabilizes and flattens at higher RPM, the cat may not be dead. It may need proper exhaust temperature and air fuel ratio to function correctly. A cat that works at 3500 but switches downstream at idle is a completely different conversation than the one that fails at every RPM.
