I just got promoted as a software engineer in a big tech company in a little less than 2 years. This is what stopped me from being promoted quicker. So that you don't make the exact same mistake. I didn't ask for it quicker. I didn't bring it up with my manager. I should have been bringing up the idea of a promotion from basically day one ones but I didn't in my one-on-ones. I waited for my manager to broach the topic themselves. I didn't ask for more important projects. I waited for my manager to give me a project. I showed a pretty decent lack of agency until I got assigned these projects. You're not gonna get anything until you ask for it. I got lucky because my manager brought up the idea of a promotion themselves, but you should be asking for things if you really want them if you wanna get promoted in a year in a half, communicate that ask for bigger impact projects that will make you look good. Do things that have high impact so that then you can actually ask your to really give don't sit around waiting for it.
