Everybody wants to own a Japanese import until you actually get one. I got in on the wrong side. It's a pain. The biggest hurdle is cost. On average it costs between five and $10,000 to import a Japanese car into the United States. And that doesn't even account for the price of the car itself. Sure, it might be a little bit cheaper overseas, but usually it's not going to outweigh the expensive fees that you're paying to import. Most of the time you're going to have to hire a broker and it's going to cost even more. Unless you want to fly to Japan and do it yourself, that's probably the best option. All in all, it takes about 12 weeks. It's a lot of time to have buyer's remorse. And after 12 long weeks, when it's finally in the United States, inspection, border patrol's going to do their check and then once that's released, you need to get it inspected by the state and get it to pass emissions, which can be a big hurdle in an oil burning rotary like the RX7. And in that whole time, you've already spent the money, so it's too late. If you can't get something to work right, you're screwed and you're out thousands of dollars. All in all, if you want a Japanese import in the United States, it all comes down to money and time. It's of course in the end, it's all worth it because having a right-hand drive car in the United States is pretty sweet.
