The influencer accent is infiltrating how women speak and it's degrading our credibility off camera. We're all familiar with this accent. It's the kind of speech that's characterized by a sing-songy rhythm and the upspeak that goes up at the end of a sentence. The accent is perfectly engineered for the algorithm to get more views, but the same speech that's getting you more views online is actually degrading your credibility in the workplace. A sing-song rhythm is more high-pitched and melodic and it can be used to make you seem more likable, but it can also cost you the perception of being more competent and dominant. Upspeak, the type of pattern where your voice goes up at the end of a sentence, makes all of your statements sound like questions and this also erodes your perceived confidence and competence. It invites people to subconsciously question the authority of your statements. For women, we're already perceived to have less competence and authority in the workplace, which is why being mindful of your speech is even more important. Have you noticed yourself speaking with the influencer accent?
