The CDC has only confirmed 843 U.S. cases of cyclosporiasis with 1,500+ more still under investigation, but Michigan alone has now reported 2,600+ cases — a state that normally sees about 40 to 50 in an entire year. The national total is climbing toward ~3,000 across 30+ states. And, weeks in, still nobody can name the food. Past outbreaks have been linked to bagged salads, cilantro, basil, raspberries, snow peas, spinach, and scallions, but that doesn't mean those are the cause this time. Raising the temperature to >158˚F / 70˚C kills the parasite, but that would be way more helpful if most of us enjoyed cooked salads. As for the CDC budget cuts, it's definitely clear that they impacted the country's visibility and investigative speed, but less clear if it's had a practical affect on tracing and stopping the outbreak (the biggest possibilities would be if it cut staff that would be conducting interviews, or impacted the genetics tracing pipeline). #Science #health #healthnews #EduTok #LearnOnTikTok
