Can you guess which one of these headshots is AI-generated and which one is real? A lot of people also couldn't tell. After using AI to edit my own LinkedIn profile picture, I started to wonder if anyone could tell the difference. So I put it to the test. I posted a real headshot of myself next to one generated by Google's Gemini. I asked LinkedIn users if they could guess which was real. The results were almost evenly split. What surprised me the most wasn't that people struggled to tell the difference. It was that almost twice as many people said they preferred the AI version. LinkedIn told Business Insider that using AI to enhance or edit your profile picture is allowed as long as it still reflects what you look like. But should you turn to an AI generated headshot? Career branding experts told me to be careful. They said authenticity still matters. And if AI changes the way you look, it could undermine trust with recruiters or hiring managers. It could also spark backlash from users on the platform if they happen to notice or if your picture is obviously not real. The advice they gave me is to use AI for subtle edits on an existing photo, not to create an entirely new version of yourself. And if you're going to spend all that time generating the perfect AI headshot, you might as well just take a new photo of yourself.
