How To Get an Internship

If you didn't get an internship this summer, I'll try to help you get one next summer. I've done three electrical engineering internships, so maybe you value my advice. There is something called the applicant tracking system or the ATS. This is basically a software that a lot of companies use, regardless of what industry you're looking at. You don't even have to be an engineering major. Where they will try to filter your resume from front to back, pulling out the things they deem good and bad. The issue with this is that you don't know what they deem bad. And I'm going to tell you some of the things you may not have even realized could hurt you. For example, a lot of students will put the full name of their university throughout their entire resume, like five different times. This is how it can hurt you. If you have a club at the end of your resume under the category extracurriculars, that's totally irrelevant to your major, then the issue is that it'll put that information in the education category if you're listing the name of your university right before that information. So I don't know, Georgia Tech basketball club. That basketball club is going to be part of education now. You don't want that. Just don't even put the name of your university. Another example would be a lot of students, especially engineering students, hyphenate the discipline of engineering that they're majoring in with the word engineering. So they'll say mechanical-engineering or electrical-engineering. The issue with this is that if you're applying to an internship that specifies you have to be majoring in this specific discipline of engineering, like mechanical-engineering or electrical-engineering, the issue is that if you apply to an internship that specifies you have to be majoring in this specific discipline of engineering, like mechanical-engineering or electrical-engineering, then it may not recognize the word mechanical or electrical because you have it hyphenated. It is not an individual word anymore. It is part of mechanical-engineering or electrical-engineering. There are a lot of different things that you don't even realize are hurting you and you just have to look up some YouTube videos and find out what you should and shouldn't be doing.
