How much of the math you learned in school do you actually use at work as an electrical engineer? That's a great question. Although I cannot speak on every single industry out there and every single company out there, what I can say is that I've done over a dozen internship interviews in a variety of different industries, from construction to consulting to utilities, defense, even nuclear. And when they ask you a difficult math question in an internship interview, most of the time, they're just testing your fundamentals and they don't actually do that math by hand on the job. And I have a couple examples of this. Couple years ago, I did a hardware engineering internship interview where they asked me to convert decimal to binary. And they literally said before I completed the problem that they don't do this type of stuff by hand. They have software that does it for them. Same thing with a signals processing internship interview that I've done. They asked me to do a Laplace transform. They have software to do that for them. What's more important as an electrical engineering student, specifically, but I'm sure that also applies to many other disciplines as well, is that you know your units. Don't get watts mixed up with volts. Know what an amp is. Know what Ohm's law is. I know that's more for electrical engineering students, but knowing those basic things is what's going to either cook you or not cook you, okay? Because the first question they'll ask you, maybe in an internship interview, like for utilities, internship interview that I've done, they asked me, what is Ohm's law? So if I got that wrong, I would have been cooked, no matter what. That's more important, in my opinion.
