After sitting abandoned and decaying for over 20 years, the fate of Merthyr General Hospital was officially sealed last week—it’s set to be completely demolished for social housing. 🏚️🚜 But this wasn’t just any old building. In the late 1800s, government grants didn’t build this hospital. The ironworkers, coal miners, and railway men of Merthyr Tydfil chipped in pennies from their hard-earned weekly wages to build a sanctuary for their own community. ⚒️🪙 Now, as Trivallis moves forward with clearing the site, the town is divided: ❓ Should they have forced developers to save the historic Victorian frontage? ❓ Or is it past the point of no return and time to build homes?
