When you're an interracial couple, people will think you and your partner are not together. And my wife and I have experienced this so many times. I'm Indian from South Africa, and my wife is Italian American from New Jersey, and we met in college. We've been together now for 11 years, so we've really paid our dues as a interracial couple. And we'll be out in public, couple weeks ago, we're getting ice cream, and the person behind the counter asked my wife what she wants. My wife gives her order. Then I go to give my order, and the woman's like, oh, you're together? And we're like, yeah, we're standing right. Right next to each other, you know? Or like, you know, we'll be putting our name down at a restaurant, um, waiting for a table, and the hostess will be like, how many? And my wife will be like, two. And she's like, oh, oh, you okay? Got it. Or like, you know, someone will open the door, hold the door open for my wife, you know, and I'll walk in behind them like, I didn't know you guys. And it's like, you know, I. I don't. I don't know if it's. If it's unconscious bias or. Or what, but, like, it's crazy to me that, like, At this time in the world that we live in, the idea of interracial couples is still somehow, like, something that. That people don't really Get right off the bat, you know? And I don't necessarily think it's like, coming from a place of discrimination or anything like that. I just think that, like, it's unconscious bias, you know? And like, I to. I'm very aware of that, you know, when we go through an airport, like, I try and stay as close to my wife as possible the entire time going through the airport process, I don't, you know, wanna be viewed as an independent entity, especially as a brown man. like, I. I try to stay as close to her as possible, and it's just. I don't know, it's crazy. I'm sure a lot of interracial couples have experienced this.
