Money conversations that you need to have before the marriage. One is family dependents. Now this isn't spoken about often, but it's really, really important that you know who is expecting money from you when you get married. Is there a mom who is reliant on you to pay the rent? Is there a little sibling who is reliant on you to put them through school? Really important that you understand what this new expectation will be like for you, what you're expecting your partner to also help you cover. This leads on to the second point, which is what are your non-negotiables? Some people, I know that are quite early on in their marriages are having to carry too much while they're still in the phase of trying to build. I think a lot of this comes down to knowing who you are when it comes to non-negotiables before you decide to enter a marriage. Three is your risk appetite. You do not want to marry someone who takes a lot of extreme risks without calculating what the cost of that would be at first. It might not sound painful in the short term, but it always comes back to bite you in the future when that risk leads to a mistake and then that turns into resentment later on. Four thing is debt. So understanding that person's debt position if they have any or if they don't, because once you do become married, unfortunately that also becomes your debt as well. And if there is debt, I think you need to understand what led to that debt in the first place. Are they maybe too risky? Do they over-leverage? Because these are things that will impact your marriage and your family in the future. If we've pointed out anything that you think, gosh, this sounds like I should be looking at myself, that's also just as important to evaluate yourself and be extremely self-aware and intelligent when it comes to what you are actually bad at, and working on that before you get married is so, so important for a marriage that stays aligned and one that is eventually successful.
