OpenAI's new research analyzed 800,000 work messages and found that people are routinely using AI to take on tasks from other jobs — designers doing engineering, sales doing finance, everyone doing marketing. I found the chart they offered up to be confusing and it hides a pattern that is important to grapple with. In this video I redraw it around two questions: which roles borrow work, and whose work gets borrowed. Three patterns fall out — lenders, hubs, and borrowers — plus an empty corner where the self-contained specialists are (but not using AI?!?). Then the question the data doesn’t answer: when you take on work outside your expertise and your name goes on the output, did you author it, or just make it? The difference is extending your skill authentically — is what the study can't measure, and it's the skill Stay Human teaches.
