1,2,4,5 is all you need to remember to understand respiratory compensation forever- it's the mountain method. And for simplicity and quick calculations, just remember that ALL metabolic compensation is 1:1. Because our respiratory system can change and adapt much faster than our kidneys, any primary metabolic change will have roughly a 1:1 change in bicarb and CO2. Didn't go into full details of reading an ABG, but this will get you most of the way there, help you figure out the primary and mixed processes, and whether there is compensation or not. So many residents and students confused compensation and throw that term around loosely and when I press them on it, they have no clue. Don't be that resident- save and learn this!
