ICU = Best Medical Specialty

The best specialty in medicine is ICU. And as an ICU doctor I am biased but I'll give you three reasons of why I think ICU is the best. Number one is an unmatched work life balance. Tell me which other specialty will allow you to work 10 days in a month and have 20 days off every single month and still make the median physician salary or actually over that based on where you work. So every month I have about 20 days off where I can do whatever else I want outside of my clinical practice and I still get to keep my skills alive. I still get to practice medicine and still have a life outside of it. Two, it's the perfect balance between physiology and understanding the medicine and the physiology of your patient as well as doing procedural work. So if you like doing things with your hands which is what I was between interventional cardiology and ICU ultimately picked ICU because of the complexity the physiology and the kinds of conversations you get to have. You're dealing with patients who are the sickest of all patients. End of life. So you're dealing with complex not only physiology but complex family dynamics. Complex ethics and end of life conversations that you have to have with. All of this makes ICU such a challenging and rewarding specialty. The third reason is that you get to see and manage the coolest 10 percent from every medical specialty. So whether that's seeing the sickest ER patient or the sickest cardiology patient. Cancer patients or anesthesia, ie. doing intubations. Post surgery patients who are the sickest. You get to see across all of medicine the sickest and you get to do like the coolest things. The coolest diseases, the coolest physiology across all specialties. These are just three of many reasons of why I love ICU and if you're considering ICU do it. You won't regret it.
