The Fake Choice Effect is when companies make you think you're in control of the trade offs, even when you're not. And of this I've the best example of this I've seen was from the Farmers Fridge vending machine. They basically sell food with a bunch of healthy options. But when I go buy something from there, it hit me with this. Which best describes your preferences? I'd rather get extra protein. I'd rather get the lowest price. This binary choice option makes me feel like I'm in control of the trade offs. Now imagine they never had the screen. When I saw just how expensive it would be to get a salad with chicken in it compared to a salad without, I might be caught off guard and really annoyed. But now that they give me the choice, I'd rather get extra protein instead of I'd rather get the lowest price. I consciously make a decision about the trade offs. I'm accepting, which makes me way more likely to buy something with extra protein, even if it's more expensive because I feel like I was the one choosing. And by the way, I completely made up the name of the fake choice effect. Sorry.
