They would achieve a tiny sliver of metal off the edge of every coin and they got it for thousands of years until governments found a genius way to stop them. The day. Back in the day, coins were made out of real silver and gold, that the coins themselves had value. But some people realized something sneaky, which is that just small bits off the edge of these coins. It wasn't enough for anyone to notice. So people kept using the coins as normal, but you were able to pocket some of that gold or silver for yourself. And those were called shavings. Once you melted down all those shavings, you could sell the metal and this whole scheme. And this whole scheme is known as coin clipping. People did this for hundreds and some coins even lost as much as one third of their original weight before it was discovered what was actually happening. So the entire was getting corrupted, but governments found a genius way to prevent all they did. Having a flat ridge on the edge of coins, they added in these bumps on the ridges of the coins. And that's actually that on a lot. We still have these ridges. It's because if someone off the ridges, you would be able to tell because the ridges would look flat instead of jagged. This was actually rolled out in England by none other than Newton. And once they rolled it out, they were basically able to put coin clipping to a dead stop.
