Sounds make a home cozy. Welcome back to the Science of Cozy series where we're learning that coziness doesn't necessarily come from a new throw pillow, but rather from triggering the five senses. Today, we will be discussing the power of sound. Not to get too scientific on you, but this is the science of cozy. Humans have an instinctual relationship with sound. Sounds associated with danger make us feel uneasy. Sounds associated with nature make us feel calm. I know it's very obvious, but we're laying the foundation. What I found the most interesting is that a space is too quiet. Our brains have no environmental information to decipher or focus on. And because of this, that we become acutely aware of a refrigerator hum in the background or even the ringing in our ears. And that level of quiet actually sets us on edge. Lack of sound forces our brains to work extra hard at determining what environment we're in right now. Our bodies need to behave in relationship to the environment. Even meditation is often practiced in deafening silence. Now, if it's a little too hot and you don't want to open your windows, that's okay, because we can introduce music. Record players, vinyl, soft jazz in the background, or your speakers, soft jazz in the background, or your speakers. When we're hosting guests in our home, playing soft music in the background while you're hosting is one of the most powerful tools we have to set the mood. I would even go as far as to say that playing music in the background while you're hosting will make so much more of an impact on your guests than deciding on the right table cloth. All this to say that sound is the invisible layer of interior design. If you want to make your home more cozy, I don't think you should buy a throw pillow first. I think you should start regularly integrating moments of sound throughout your home. Science literally says that sound will make so much more of an impact than another home decor item. In the next episode, we'll be going over touch and how bringing the sensory element of touch can make your home more cozy. Much love. See you guys next time.
