[ THINGS TO DO ] A SECRET FAIRY VILLAGE IS HIDDEN INSIDE THIS FREE BUSHLAND SANCTUARY 30 MINUTES NORTH OF BRISBANE Kumbartcho Sanctuary in Eatons Hill is one of the easiest free family days out on Brisbane's northern edge, and the best part is the secret. At the end of a short bush trail, behind a tiny magic door, is a handmade fairy village filled with miniature houses, gnomes and animal figures. The whole place is run by volunteers in partnership with the City of Moreton Bay, it sits on protected bushland along the South Pine River, and it costs nothing to walk in. THE SECRET FAIRY VILLAGE 🚪 The magic door: Follow the signs to the fairy trail and step through a little magic door to find the village hidden in the trees. 🏠 The fairy houses: Handmade miniature homes, a gnome hollow and animal figures are dotted through the bush, and the display is constantly added to and rearranged. 💌 The fairy post box: Kids can post their own letter to the fairies, and if you include a stamped self addressed envelope, the fairies write back. THE REST OF THE SANCTUARY 🐨 Wildlife walks: Trails wind along the South Pine River and Kumbartcho Lake, where you can spot koalas, turtles, frogs, possums and bush birds. 🛝 The playground: A fully fenced, shady playground with a rope bridge, slide, swings and a colonial style playhouse, plus picnic tables and barbecues. 🌱 The native nursery: A volunteer run community nursery selling native plants from as little as $2.50 each. 🏛️ The environment centre: Free displays, a touch and feel corner, and old footage of Steve and Terri Irwin moving animals from the former Bunya Wildlife Park to help start Australia Zoo. GOOD TO KNOW 🚘 Free parking is on site, but the two small carparks fill fast on weekend and school holiday mornings, so arrive early. 🎟️ Entry is free and the grounds are open every day from dawn to dusk. ✍🏻 Bring paper for a fairy letter, and pack a stamped self addressed envelope if you want a reply. 🐶 No dogs, cats, horses, bikes, scooters or skateboards are allowed on site. 📍 Kumbartcho Sanctuary is located at 15 Bunya Pine Court, Eatons Hill Who are you taking with you?
