Ultra-processed foods (UPF) Oh, this one is very close to my heart. So I'll put on a 5 minute timer and let's go. Focused research for 5 mins RULES: - NO AI - NO phone - handwritten notes only Then 1 min presentation So I've done about 5 minutes of research. I have a couple of notes, so let's go. Okay, so ultra-processed foods are industrially made foods containing ingredients that you would rarely use at home such as emulsifiers, flavor enhancers, sweeteners and modified starches. You want to think of things like fizzy drinks, sweets, instant noodles, chicken nuggets, Doritos, Pringles, and the list goes on. And I want to focus on these two brands because these brands actually employ food engineers that are essentially dedicated to optimizing the salt, the fat, the flavor, the crunch, which actually makes them intensely rewarding and deliberately hard to stop consuming. And this matters because UPF to have high sugar, salt, fat, but they're often low in fiber and nutrients, which makes them very easy to over consume. And I want to give you some things to swap them for. So maybe we can swap crisps for nuts or popcorn, sugary cereal for porridge, fizzy drink for flavored water. But I want to reiterate that you just don't need to be a perfectionist. You just want to choose foods that resemble the original form more often because life is about balance.
