Make decisions from the perspective of who you want to become, not just who you are today. This is one of the most powerful ways I've learned to make better decisions in my life. As someone who spent years studying science, while in consulting, studying at Cambridge, I've actually realized so much of growth comes down to this one idea. Because every decision you make is quietly shaping your identity. If you want to become more disciplined, confident, healthy, courageous, whatever it is, stop only asking, what do I feel like doing right now? And start asking, what would the person I want to become do? That question does five really powerful things. Number one, it shifts you from outcome thinking to identity thinking. You stop obsessing over how do I get there and actually start thinking about who do I need to become to get there. Secondly, it pulls you out of short-term thinking. Your present self might want comfort, but your future self might want the life that exists on the other side of that discomfort. Thirdly, it creates consistency. You don't become someone new overnight. You become them from hundreds of tiny decisions that slowly start to look like a personality and an identity. Fourth, it gives you something stronger than your emotions to make decisions from. Because your mood changes, your motivation changes, but the person you're choosing to become can still act as your compass. And finally, every time you make a decision that aligns with the person you want to become, you give yourself evidence that you're already becoming them. And that's the beautiful part because your future self isn't some distant person you'll meet one day. You're building them right now, one decision at a time. So the next time you're unsure about what to do, don't ask yourself what's the easiest. Instead, ask, what choice moves me one step closer to the person I want to become?
