Things I didn't know about the Chernobyl disaster. 1. Victims bodies melted from the inside out. Number one, the victims died in a really gruesome way. Their bodies basically melted from the inside out. I'm using a screenshot from the HBO show Chernobyl to give an example of kind of what it looked like. I can't show a real example because it's actually more gruesome than this. But we'll get into the gruesome details in a minute. 2. The night shift wasn't prepared for the test. Number two, the night shift, they weren't trained to do the test that evening. And because of that, they almost destroyed Europe. So basically, they were running a test and the day shift was supposed to complete it because they were the trained ones. But there were so many delays that it went over into the night shift, and they weren't prepared for it. So basically, reactor number three would look like this. This would be the lid and right here are all these little rods that would go down into the reactor. And the rods look a little bit like this. So when the rods are down, it cuts the chain reaction and the energy goes down. And when they lift the rods up, the chain reaction begins and the energy goes up. So when there was that sudden drop in power, they decided to pull 200 of the 208 rods up to try to get the energy to go back up. But this was a mistake. To that led to a spike in energy and then someone hit the scram button, which puts all the rods down. But when all the rods went down at the same time, it created an explosion which blew the whole lid, the whole ceiling of the plant. What they didn't know is that the tips of the rods were graphite, meant that when they went down at the same time, they actually energy spiked before cutting it out. After the explosion, the reactor was exposed to the world, letting out deadly radiation. A giant beam of gamma rays and neutrons was going into the sky, which was super deadly. The initial explosion killed two workers and burned two others that were nearby. 5. The boss & two other died from looking into reactor. So the guy in charge that night didn't want to believe the explosion was the actual reactor. He thought it was something else. And he came and was like, "The reactor is gone." He's like, "That's impossible. We have to go up to the roof to look to really find out." So he gets three other guys, including the guy that told him that the reactor was gone, to go up to the roof. But that guy that told him that the reactor was gone, he'll hold the door for you and three guys went in. And those three guys ended up dying because radioactive when they looked down into the core, they saw that it was gone. And they came back out. And they're like, "Yeah, you were right." The door was actually radioactive. So the guy holding it, his hand and arm that was touching it ended up paying the price later. 6. The firefighters don't know its a radioactive fire! 😱🤯💀 The firefighters show up to put out the fire, but they don't know it's a radioactive fire. And they even start grabbing some of the graphite after they put out the fire, which is super radioactive. That ends up being a gruesome mistake. And those two... we're going to get into those details in part two!
