I used to think about food from the moment that I would wake up in the morning to the moment that my head hit the pillow at night. And if that is also your life, you need to do these two things. I'm serious. I used to wake up in the morning and my very first thought would be, Laura, you're going to be good today. You're not going to eat any of that junk food, no sugar, no candy, none of that. You're going to stay away from it. And then I would spend the entire day telling myself, you're not allowed to have it, stay away from it. Be stronger than that. You've got this. Stay away. And then by the end of the day, I would have eaten so much junk food, like it was this gravitational pull. I could not stay away from it. And then I would go to bed feeling so guilty and so ashamed, and that would be my entire day, every single day. Finally, I came to understand that that feeling is something called food noise. Food noise is not an issue of willpower. It has nothing to do with your character. It has to do with things that are going on inside of your body and your body is trying to communicate with you and let you know what's going on inside. So the first thing that you are going to do is stop skipping breakfast or any meals for that matter. If you eat really tiny meals throughout the day, the reason that you have this food noise is because you're not eating enough. So you've got to stop skipping meals. Number two, start planning ahead for an afternoon snack. I was telling myself, you don't need to eat, stay away from the food. And then by the afternoon, I would actually be hungry. And my body was trying to just get what it needed by asking me for food. But I was saying, stay away, stay away, stay away. And then my body would get louder and louder, you're hungry, you're hungry. So I started planning ahead for a snack that fit my health and wellness goals. And the combination of eating more earlier in the day and having a well-balanced snack in the afternoons kept my food noise at bay so much better.
