A conversation we need to have about food, budgets & choice. ❤️ I’ve spent years trying to find the balance between encouraging people to make better food choices and recognising that not everyone has the financial freedom to make the “perfect” choice. I saw this with my Christmas veg posts too. I shared the heavily reduced potatoes, carrots etc. and showed people how to store them so they could last for months. To some, it might just look like cheap veg content. But I had SO many messages from families saying it had saved a huge amount from their food budget and meant they had affordable food going into January, February and even March. ❤️ The £25 shop came from a real person — a single mum of three who works as a nurse. She had been in tears and was pleading with me for help because she had **£25 MAXIMUM** to feed her family for around 8 days. She couldn’t go a penny over. The eggs fitted her budget. That’s why they were there. And I see this side of life constantly through my messages. People panicking about money, wondering what they can afford, having to put things back at the till or choosing between two essentials because they simply don’t have enough. I know this because I didn’t grow up with money either. I remember my mum taking my nan shopping so that if the budget went over, she could help. This is real life for a lot of people. Would I encourage free-range if you can afford it? ABSOLUTELY. Every time. ❤️ But we also need to recognise the privilege in being able to spend an extra 80p without thinking about it. We can care deeply about animal welfare AND understand that sometimes people are simply buying what they can afford. Both things can be true. If you feel strongly about animal welfare, have those conversations with supermarkets, producers and policymakers too. Judging someone who is already struggling won’t change the system. Food prices continue to rise, and I’m here trying to help people make their money stretch as far as possible. Please encourage better choices when people can afford them, but never judge someone for the choice they have to make. You have no idea what someone else is going through. ❤️
