If you’ve bought cut basil from the supermarket, don’t throw it away the stems! You can turn a few cuttings into brand new plants. Here’s how: 🌱 Cut a few healthy stems, leaving a couple of leaves at the top and removing the lower leaves. 💧 Place the stems in a glass of water. 🚰 Keep the water topped up (and change it every few days if it starts looking cloudy). ☀️ Leave them somewhere bright but out of harsh direct sunlight. 🌿 After a few weeks, you’ll see roots start to grow. 🪴 Once the roots are a few centimetres long and well established, plant them into compost and keep the soil lightly moist. One supermarket basil plant can give you new plants again and again, saving money and reducing waste. Top tip: You don’t need rooting powder, but if you already have some, you can dip the cut end before placing it in water. Some gardeners also use honey as a natural alternative, although simply placing healthy basil cuttings in fresh water usually works just as well. 🌱 Save this post so you can try it yourself!
