Why I Got Fired

I still get a lot of questions about why I got fired at the Loyd and it makes sense because it's a little confusing. I ended up getting promoted to a second year and then six months later I was getting fired. I ended up getting my CPA, getting my CPA bonus and I still got fired. I remember a manager pulled me aside and said, hey, a lot of people go through personal things, but they still manage to turn things in on time. I remember early on, I would spend a lot of time trying to automate things in Excel, trying to do some crazy formulas to make sure that it's the, you know, the most efficient work paper when I should have really just focused on turning it in, turning it in good work and doing it the way that it was intended to be done rather than trying to transform it into something that didn't really add a ton of value at the time. And I look back and I think a lot of it was culture shock. It was me having to learn how to be in this corporate environment. Nobody in my family was, you know, came from corporate, so nobody was telling me how to interact with people, how to interact with clients, and it's just a big learning curve. And I just didn't learn fast enough to operate at that level that they needed me to, especially in a client-facing role like audit. You need to be turning things in on time, you need to make sure that you're asking the right questions. All those things matter. And all those things I was not doing great at. The Loyd gave me some transition coach afterwards to help me get a new job and they still gave me a lot of resources and so for that, I'm grateful. And I'm grateful for having the Loyd on my resume because that really jump-started my career in tech and 12 years later, I've led a successful career even though I got fired at the Loyd.
