One of the most impossible facts about Shark Tank is that at the beginning of the show, you had to give up equity whether you landed a deal or not. I can't even believe how predatory this is and the fact that this is true. You see, on seasons one through four of Shark Tank, the rule was that if you made an appearance, you had to either give 5% equity or 2% of the profits of your company forever, just for appearing. Even if you walked away with no deal, the sharks didn't like your product, you would still have to give that up. And you could argue this is fair cause they're getting so much exposure, so surely their company is gonna grow from this. But there's a difference between a finite time period or return on investment and one that's a stake in someone's company forever for one single appearance. They did actually end this tradition, but it wasn't because they realized what they were doing wrong. It was actually all because of Mark Cuban. He tried to explain to the producers how this rule was preventing good entrepreneurs from coming on the show, which he's 100% right about. No seasoned entrepreneur would give up 5% of their company or 2% of profits in perpetuity forever, just for one appearance on Shark Tank. Crucially than that, Mark Cuban threatened to leave unless they made this change. He literally said on Facebook, I wouldn't come back this season if they didn't remove that clause. Because the producers knew that Mark Cuban was a fan favorite on the show, they decided to go by his wish and remove the clause. But it wasn't just that. They also retroactively went to the contestants on the first four seasons and removed the clause from their contracts as well. Meaning that a single ultimatum from Mark Cuban changed the course of how the show went forever and got countless entrepreneurs off of what most people would consider a completely predatory contract. And I teach money mind one story at a time. So follow.
