That Nantucket antique shop owner's "no influencers" sign makes more and more sense with each passing day. About two months ago I posted a video after seeing Alix Earle's GRWM where she was getting dressed for Wimbledon. And this was just shortly following Morgan Riddle's comments on that podcast where she said that sports are moving towards "female centered marketing" and now it's shifted. It's about the fashion, the travel, the lifestyle, the personal lives of the players," she said. "Social media has also really contributed to that because before, sport was a viewing experience, and now it's so participatory." Basically things not related to the sport at all. And I expressed in that video that I wished that more brands would collaborate with influencers that are genuine sports fans and are actually knowledgeable about the sports and the sporting events that they're being sent to. Basic etiquette falls into that knowledge discussion that I'm talking about. And I said in that video that the way influencers behave at sporting events is so off putting to sports fans. And to see this video of influencers using ring lights during matches?? And not even during breaks in the middle of points??? The fact that an umpire had to make an announcement to turn off ring lights during play. What are we doing here? Basic tennis etiquette is you don't even get up from your seat and walk out when a game is ongoing. You wait for the game to end. As I mentioned in my video a couple of months ago, I know that the things I'm saying sound gatekeepy and snobby, but I honestly don't care anymore. If you're gonna go to a sporting event, respect the sport. And y'all might think that I'm "it's not that deep" it's not that serious. It kind of is. It is a Grand Slam. It is a major tournament. And we can't even brush up on basic courtesy? Basic spectator expectations?? I'm just gonna go ahead and call out the brands themselves because if you're going to invite influencers, it is your responsibility to ensure that they behave appropriately. You should be sending briefs with "tennis etiquette 101". You shouldn't even be talking during the match. And I'm already on my soapbox and fully warmed up, so I'm just gonna go ahead and keep going. The thing that really agitates me is that a lot of these influencers show up, order their honeydewce, take some cute pictures and videos by shining their ring light on full blast in the middle of a match while Naomi Osaka is trying to hit a serve. Take their pictures and videos and leave. They don't stay for the full match. They just shoot their content, get their free stuff, get their drink, and leave. Ticket prices are out the wazoo because of influencers. It would be one thing if ticket prices were out the wazoo due to an increase in genuine interest and organic growth of the sport. But because some influencers order a honeydewce and shine their ring light? No thanks!
