Tap the link in my bio to start the drawing drills course. Grapes are a great way to practice hatching because you’re basically drawing the same simple form over and over again. Each grape is a little sphere. So instead of thinking about “shading grapes,” think about wrapping lines around a round surface. Let the hatching curve with the form. Keep your spacing consistent. Then add another layer where you need the value to get darker. And because the grapes overlap, you also get to practice something really important: keeping the shadows consistent across a whole group of objects. One grape isn’t getting completely different lighting from the grape sitting next to it. Same light source. Same rules. That repetition is what makes simple subjects like this so useful for practice. You’re drawing grapes, but you’re really training your eye to understand form, light, and value.
