Your back has more visible surface area than your chest. It's the biggest canvas you own and most guys only build half of it. Pull-ups and rows build lats. Lats are width. Width reads head-on and that's where it stops. Turn a wide back sideways and it can still look like paper — flat between the blades, shirt hanging straight down off the shoulders with nothing pushing it out. Quick check. Stand sideways to a mirror. The mid and lower traps are what turn a flat back into something with depth, not the upper traps that bunch around the neck. The ones that pull the shoulder blades down and back. The fibers that create a thick shelf between the shoulders. Most back covered. They do pull-ups, they do rows. And those build the lats, the width. But width and thickness are two different things. You can have a wide back that looks paper thin from the side. The mid-roids, what adds layer, density, pushes out blades of hang. Build to do we gonna do prone Y-raises. Lay chest down on a flat bench. Grab two light dumbbells. Now, raise both arms and out into a Y. Thumbs to the ceiling. You're gonna feel your mid traps lock at the top. Hold that for two seconds. Don't rush it. If you're not feeling a deep squeeze between the shoulder blades, the weight is too heavy or the range is too short. Three sets, 12 reps. Keep it light. This all about contraction.
