The map does not match the paycheck. A bigger number in a cheap state and a smaller number in an expensive one are not the same life. Rent, taxes, and student loans decide what that offer is actually worth. Three things I tell students and young attendings: 1. Raw salary is the headline. Take-home is the story. 2. Specialty still beats geography. 3. Coastal resident stipends look higher until you divide by rent. If you are choosing a program or a first job, run the offer against housing, state tax, and malpractice — not an old Instagram graphic still circulating. — Dr. Steven Cyr Save this. Send it to someone still quoting old numbers. #physicianlife #residency #nurselife #doctorsalary #medstudent
