I saw about five different doctors for my acid reflux when it was at its worst. I felt super dismissed when PPIs didn't work for me, and I was told that I would just need to stay on them for life, and there was nothing else they could do. This is such a common experience, especially for those who have GERD that doesn't respond to PPIs or have a type of reflux called silent reflux or laryngopharyngeal reflux. It's been shown in research that this type of reflux does not respond to PPIs because the root cause of LPR is often non-acid reflux or pepsin that has come up with reflux embedded into the throat tissues. This pepsin enzyme creates the symptoms in the throat, such as coughing, post-nasal drip, throat clearing, and throat burn or feeling like something is stuck in your throat. In order to heal from LPR, I wish that someone told me that PPIs are not the end-all, be-all, and we have to prevent the movement of reflux upwards, which PPIs do nothing for. What helps prevent mechanical reflux is the things I talk about here on my page: • a low-acid healing phase • the 3-hour buffer • not eating food 3 hours before bed • the use of strategic supplementation, such as alginates and slippery elm @Sequoia Soothe • nervous system regulation • understanding the root contributors of your LPR, whether that be chronic stress, H. pylori, or certain lifestyle factors that have contributed to the onset of this disease If you have felt dismissed and ignored by your symptoms, you are not alone, and you're in exactly the right place.
