how much did going from one dog to two dogs change our lives when we were thinking about getting a second dog the logic that we kind of deluded ourselves to was well we already walk one dog feed one dog what more work could two dogs really be it's a lie I would say in terms of time it is quite similar but in terms of costs our costs have more than double Lulu was already eight or nine when we got Havi and her back her vet costs were fairly stable she would get like a check up a year she didn't really have any health issues and then we got Havi back there *chewing feet* and he's a medical disaster so he already has had two surgeries (one in Japan!) his medical cost have been very variable so our medical cost or vet cost have more than doubled another cost that we had when we first got him was training cost because he was younger and we wanted him to you know develop some basic skills we ended up sending him to puppy school which again was not a cost that we had uh when we just had Lulu the third cost is going away so whenever we go on vacation when we just have Lulu who is small very catlike and quite easy to take care of uh it was pretty easy to find a friend who wanted to or was willing to watch her for a weekend or even a week um because she's pretty easy and doesn't require a lot of walking you know she's already 11 now so she's easy but when you get a younger dog or a dog with a lot more energy and you have two of them it's kind of a huge ask for a friend to watch them for more than you know a day or something so we end up finding uh professional care usually when we go out of town for either one or both of them so it can vary between 75 to 100 a night uh in San Francisco so every time we go out of town now we have to factor in those costs as well which we had almost none of before and of course he's also a bigger dog so our food cost did more than double but not by a lot uh and our medication cost more than doubled for even like flea and tick because he's a bigger size dog so yes the cost were way more than just double uh which can vary I guess depending on the type or size the second dog you get and how medically or training complex they are but that was true for us but all said and done we are super happy to have two now that she is 11 I think it's nice to have a younger dog who can kinda keep her young and push us to keep going on walks and hikes so overall hundred percent worth it but it was a bit of a delusion to be like this won't really change our lives
