I just watched every Paul Thomas Anderson movie for the first time ever, here are my top five. At the five spot, give me Magnolia. This is a really weird one for me to rank because I'm not kidding you, 20 minutes left in this movie, I was ready to declare it like a top five movie of all time. And then the frogs happen. I'm not lying, I have not been that surprised by a movie ending since The Departed. I'm not joking. It's been two days since I watched Magnolia and I'm still shell-shocked and I think with time, I'll learn to appreciate the frogs and this will climb back to the one spot in my rankings, but for now, it's at the five. I cannot believe this isn't going to be the number one movie in my rankings, that's just how good PTA is, but give me Boogie Nights. First 20 minutes of this movie, I just could not get into it. I thought I was getting ready to watch a two and a half hour porno. But after the New Year's party, which kicks off the fall from grace for all of these characters in the porn industry, it becomes an entirely new movie and I was all in. I'd say this is the closest PTA gets to directing a horror movie, but then I'd be lying because There Will Be Blood is actually a horror movie. There is no getting around it. Daniel Plainview is a monster. And Daniel Day-Lewis not only gives the best performance of this movie, of his career, but maybe of all time as Daniel Plainview. Oh, and the crazy part, Paul Dano in his second movie is going toe-to-toe with him. This is a great depiction of greed and cruelty in the oil industry in the early 1900s. Pair that up with great performances from Day-Lewis and Paul Dano, and pair that up with a great score from Jonny Greenwood. This is a masterpiece, I have no notes. At my two spot, the biggest surprise of this PTA journey was Punch-Drunk Love. I had already seen Uncut Gems, so I knew Adam Sandler could act, but man, oh man, is he good in this movie. If I were to do a ranking of best PTA characters, Barry Egan would be very high on that list. I just love this super socially awkward, weird guy open up, become vulnerable because he's starting to fall in love with some girl. I can't explain it, but this movie just made me feel good, I laughed a lot, it was a great time. And at my one spot, give me Phantom Thread. In my videos, you will hear me talking about how I loved movies or that a movie was a masterpiece or excellent. Very rarely will you ever hear me say a movie is perfect. Phantom Thread is a perfect movie.
