Some of the top tech companies will pay you 500k plus per year and then some. You 250k even if you're the same level. Be careful where you go. Here is a great graph from levels.fyi guys showing the magnificent 7 tech companies pay for senior software engineers. The X axis is total comp in thousands of dollars and then the Y axis are the Mag 7 companies. So Tesla, Microsoft, Nvidia, Apple, Amazon, Meta and Google. Clearly what we can see here is that Tesla does not pay you very well if you're a senior software engineer where the median total comp is 240k per year. No surprise, but Microsoft also doesn't pay very well. Similar median total comp to Tesla. Then you get this bump up. Nvidia, Apple, Amazon and Google all paying between 350k and 400k per year. And then you have Meta coming in top pay senior SWEs coming in at around 480k per year. So moral of the story, different companies will pay you different amounts of money even if it's the same role. Range expectation going in. This will help you during negotiation. And if you need help with the negotiation, check out my Total Compensation Masterclass.
