Prestige is incredibly important and elite institutions help filter out higher performers from lower performers. For example, on average, someone who went to MIT will outperform someone who went to Texas. However, one thing I've learned from interviewing hundreds of not thousands of candidates is that someone who is top 5% at a school like Texas will easily beat out the bottom 50% from a school like MIT. So at the end of the day, prestige is incredibly important. I will never deny this, but you can find exceptional people from non-elite institutions.
