If you don't understand these three networking basic principles, you're not ready for a cyber security job. If you're new here, my name is Nate, the best smelling IT and cyber security professional, and I help people break into the industry. So if that interests you, make sure you drop a follow. Now, the first principle that we're going to go over is how data moves. A really simple way to think about how data moves across a network is going to be thinking about what happens when someone googles google.com. The first thing that happens is going to be a DNS lookup. Then, of course, we have our TCP handshake. Next, the different packets, this is a data packet, get packaged up, and they get a nice little, pretty little bow on top. That's what happens, okay? And then it gets sent out. How does it get sent out? That is going to be dealt with by the actual router, okay? The router, normally they have these little antennas on it, takes the data that's been packaged up all nice and pretty, that gets sent to the router, and then the router sends it out to, this is my really bad drawing of a data rack, but the data from the router then goes to the main server, and then the main server brings it back to your screen. That's a very quick, blunt way of how data moves across a network, okay? Definitely go study all those concepts. Be able to explain a TCP handshake, DNS lookup, all that good stuff. Okay, moving on. Second up, the biggest thing that you need to understand is IP addressing. You need to understand what a slash 24 is. You need to understand what does a gateway actually do. You need to understand what a NAT is, okay? These are all very core concepts that you need to understand when it comes to IP addressing. Also, honorable mention, you're gonna need to understand subnetting. If you can simply define what subnetting is and understand the core principles of subnetting, you'll stand out in an interview, trust me. All right, now, the third and most important principle when it comes to cyber security, I would say, is network device types and the segmentation of it all. So when I'm talking about knowing the differences between devices, you should know things like what does a switch do and how is that different between an IDS? Other network things you should know in terms of devices. What is a VLAN? What does a VLAN do? And also, if you aren't privy to it, you should probably figure out and learn what segmentation is. If your main network is here, do you want all your resources to be accessible through that? Or do you want to have an isolated network over here that they have to go through via a VPN so that way they can actually get to the source, destination. Learning things like segmentation is actually going to help you a ton in your cyber security journey. Networking is one of the most core, fundamental things that you need to learn if you want any type of career in cyber security. So if you don't know these basic things that I have just put in this video, and this, trust me, this is very surface level for networking. It gets absolutely crazy. If you don't understand these concepts, you need to take your time with them, okay? Trust me, this is something you do not want to skip and, nor, in my opinion, could you actually skip if you wanted a healthy, long lasting career in cyber security.
