when you notice your quiet friend's acting weird

I made a friend at work and I could tell something was a little bit off about this guy because he kept avoiding eye contact and he only spoke when spoken to. But with most introverts, there's 2 things they probably like: gaming and books. And he liked both. So everyday for lunch I asked him about those 2 things, any latest games he's playing, any updates on the books he's been reading. And this went on for several months. But then the holiday party came around and this is 1000+ people, so it's huge. And he brought his mom as a +1. And when he introduced her I was like, dude, that's so smart. Now you and your mom can have free food. What a great idea. But then when he went to the bathroom his mom asked "Are you Jason?" And I was like, "Yeah, I think I'm the only Jason here actually." And she said "so you're the jason that he always talks about." And she went on and she said, "you know, he's been at this company for several years now and he has not made a single friend. He actually spends lunch eating alone everyday. And it was so sad for me to see, because everyday I ask him how work was?" He just say "Eh, it's fine". Until he met you. The day he met you, he came home that day and he was so happy. He told me "hey mom, I made a new friend at work today." And ever since then, every day when he comes home from work, he just tells me all about the things that you guys talked about, the events that you guys go to, the socials, the girls that you're dating. And I hope you don't think I'm weird for sharing this with you so please don't tell him I told you this but he is so happy to have you as a friend. You really made his life happier." And at that point, he came back from the bathroom and I was just tearing up. I said "alright dude, anything you want for lunch next time? It's on me, bro." And he said "mom, what did you tell him?" And she said "I just told him what a great friend he is." And he was like "mom, stop it, you're gonna embarrass me." And I was like "no dude, dude, dude. I'm so happy to have you as a friend." I gave him a hug and I said "let's hang out more often outside of work, okay? Maybe we can play some games next time." What do you guys think? Has this happened to you?
