Reply to Georgia's comment Also colleges and universities play a hand in impoverishing the communities which surround them yes this is absolutely 100% true colleges and universities are a massive drain on the cities and towns they exist in and a lot of smaller cities that are considered college towns are very poor cities outside of that college one of the easier examples to see with this is Yale in the surrounding city of New Haven New Haven is a fairly lower income city overall but Yale is obviously you know Yale this is due to a variety of reasons but very often it has to do with colleges draining resources from a community without paying taxes on all of those resources the same way people would when I was in college our newspaper published a story about the fact that our local firefighters were actually running out of money in the beginning of their year because of how many times they had to come to our school due to fire alarms why was this happening because people in my dorm were smoking weed too much and setting off the fire alarm continuously forcing the local fire department to come over every time there are some colleges that try to be better neighbors to their local communities but a lot of them really don't and it's something they need to work on
