People change and forget to tell one another. As someone in her mid-20s, this quote by Lilian Helman really resonates with me. There is so much growth happening in this period not just with yourself but with everyone around you. And with that can come discomfort and familiarity. Your 20s are the first time in your life when there isn't this shared experience or structure that holds you all together. The journey that was once collective evolves into something much more personal as you are venture into different careers, you meet new people and you begin to want different things. Friends might end up surprising you. They might change into people that you don't recognize all that you have less in common with. You will also change although you might not even realize it and they'll probably be thinking the same about you. The discomfort comes from all sorts of emotions. Morning what you once had, jealousy when new friends start to come in, fears of being left behind or wondering if you're being judged on the choices that you make. None of this has ever discussed yet we all feel it. What I try to remind myself is that the feelings of discomfort doesn't mean that something is wrong. It doesn't necessarily mean that that friendship is coming to its end. It's just different and taking a new shape. You're allowed to feel happy for your friend and also feel a bit nostalgic and maybe a bit sad that things are changing and they aren't what they once were. But this is your reminder that everyone is navigating the same feeling and maybe if we set it out loud, maybe if we remember to tell each other, we'd realize we were never as far apart as we thought.
