1 year ago, I upgraded my hand-me-down 2010 Toyota Camry for a shiny new Porsche. Here's why I think this Porsche was actually a smarter financial decision than continuing to drive my beater around. And spoiler alert, I don't actually own this car, I lease it. So backstory, I had been driving around this janky hand-me-down Camry literally my entire licensed life. From the age of 16 to 29, Cammy the Camry had seen both side mirrors knocked off, front and back bumpers ripped off, all four hub caps probably stolen, and DIY paint and tape jobs, but it still refused to die on me. For most of those 13 years in my literal ride or die, I convinced myself that it's just a car. I didn't care what ride I used to get me from point A to point B. I didn't care that I had no backup camera or remote key or Apple CarPlay or working AC or hub caps, until I did care. Because 2025 was my first full year as a business owner, and let's just say I had a little bit of extra income to upgrade the whip. And as you guys know, I am a hardcore believer that there is nothing wrong with a tiny bit of lifestyle creep as long as you are still living within your means. So I went and specked out the Porsche, test drove it and everything. I had enough cash to cover over 50% down to buy this Macan as a business vehicle under IRS section 179 because this car was over 6,000 lbs and it would absolutely be used for my business. But then, I got a call from the sales manager literally right before I was about to make that two hour drive to the dealership, and she said that she had been reviewing my financials and told me that I should actually lease, not finance, for four reasons. One, EVs depreciate faster, so why not just pay for the years when the car is worth the most? Two, you can write off almost all of your lease payments, whereas with buying you can only write off depreciation. Three, at the end of the lease, I can return the car to the dealership if I want to change my ride or I can buy it at the remaining value if I still love it. Four, Porsche was offering a $6,000 rebate for leased vehicles only at the time, and so that last reason sold me. So now, I drive this Porsche to events and conferences and make viral content in it, and all of that is literally my business. So the Camry was costing me money to keep it alive, whereas the Porsche is now paying me back. TLDR, sometimes the upgrade is the responsible choice.
